There are a lot of coaches out there, with varying skill and experience level. And, there are some negative perceptions of coaching.
As I deepen in my own coaching journey and conduct market research, I’m realizing that there are a lot of misconceptions about coaching.
So, I wanted to debunk them here!
1. Coaching is not therapy
Nor is it consulting, advising, teaching, or mentoring. Coaching uses powerful questions to help you uncover what it is you most deeply desire, what’s getting in the way, and how to forge a new path.
2. Coaching does not fix
This is a big one. We are conditioned to go into the beloved problem-solving mode. But looking at a person as a “problem” to be “solved” is problematic. Instead, coaching holds that each person is naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. Meaning — there is nothing to be fixed. Coaching simply creates the container and space to allow the client to look at their “problem” from a different perspective.
3. Coaching is not prescriptive
Often in coaching, a client might present a specific challenge. The presenting challenge is not always the root of the challenge. In fact, it is often not. Through questions, observations, and deepening of emotions, we examine what is truly at the root of a presenting challenge, so you can feel it, and then move out of it.
So now that we know what coaching is not… what is it actually?
Coaching is…
Co-created between the coach and the client
Focused on what is present now and what is possible in the future
An opportunity to see your blind spots, so you can improve your quality of life
A space to bring awareness to and reflect on what you are doing and who you are being
Best understood through experiencing a session
Letting go of a specific outcome, and trusting the process
I am offering three sample coaching sessions this week! If you’d like to claim one of those, reply to this email or book a time with me at the link in my bio.
I would love to give you a powerful experience so you can get more clear on what you want and understand how coaching can help.
In loving support,
Grace
